Great Plains Synfuels Plant and Weyburn-Midale - CCUS Projects
The Great Plains Synfuels Plant in North Dakota produces synthetic natural gas from coal and captures the resulting CO2 emissions. This CO2 is transported via pipeline to the Weyburn-Midale fields in Saskatchewan, Canada, where it is used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and subsequently stored in geological formations. The project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by sequestering CO2 while boosting oil production, demonstrating a successful integration of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies.

Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline Company
Date Started:
1984
CO2 Capacity:
3M tonnes
Technology:
The Great Plains Synfuels Plant captures CO2 from synthetic natural gas production. The CO2 is piped to Saskatchewan for EOR and geological storage, reducing emissions and enhancing oil recovery.
