Where can CO2 be stored?

CO2 can be stored in geological formations such as depleted oil and gas fields, saline aquifers, or unmineable coal seams.

CO2 storage involves injecting the captured gas into suitable geological formations. Depleted oil and gas fields are often used due to their known geology and existing infrastructure. Saline aquifers, which are porous rock formations filled with saltwater, offer significant storage capacity. Unmineable coal seams can also store CO2, with the added benefit of potentially enhancing methane recovery. These storage sites are selected based on their ability to securely contain CO2 for long periods, preventing its release into the atmosphere.
